Al-Hasan ibn Ali ibn Abi Talib (Arabic: الحسن ابن علي ابن أبي طالبAl-Ḥasan ibn Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib; 624–670 CE), commonly known as Hasan or Hassan, was the eldest son of Ali and Muhammad's daughter Fatimah, and was the older brother of Husayn. Muslims respect him as a grandson of the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. Among Shia Muslims, Hasan is revered as the second Imam. Hasan was elected for the caliphate after his father's death, but abdicated after six or seven months to Muawiyah I, the founder of the Umayyad dynasty[6][7] to end the First Fitna.[8] Al-Hasan was known for donating to the poor, his kindness to the poor and bondmen, and for his knowledge, tolerance and bravery.[9] For the rest of his life, Hasan lived in Medina, until he died at the age of 45 and was buried in the Jannat al-Baqi cemetery in Medina. His wife, Ja'da bint al-Ash'at, is commonly accused of having poisoned him.[6][7][10][11][12][13]

حسن بن علی بن ابی‌طالب نخستین فرزند امام علی(ع) و فاطمه زهرا(س) و نخستین نوه پیامبر اسلام(ص) است.[۱] نسب او به بنی‌هاشم و قریش می‌رسد.[۲]
- نام، کنیه، القاب
واژه حَسَن» به معنای نیکو است. این نام را پیامبر(ص) برای او برگزید.[۳] در روایاتی آمده است، این نامگذاری به فرمان الهی انجام شد.[۴] نام‌های حسن و حسین معادل شَبَّر و شَبیر (یا شَبّیر)،[۵] نام پسران هارون است[۶] که قبل از اسلام نزد مردم عرب سابقه‌ای نداشت.[۷]
کنیه او را ابومحمد» و ابوالقاسم» گفته‌اند[۸] و برای او القابی همچون مجتبی (برگزیده) و سَیّد (سرور) و زَکیّ (پاکیزه) برشمرده‌اند.[۹] القابی نیز مشترک میان حسنین است از جمله سیّد شباب اهل الجنة» و ریحانة نبیّ الله»[۱۰] و سبط».[۱۱] در روایتی از پیامبر(ص) آمده است: حسن یکی از اسباط است».[۱۲] واژه سبط را در روایات و برخی آیات قرآن به معنای امام و نَقیبی دانسته‌اند که از طرف خداوند برگزیده شده و از نسل پیامبران است.[۱۳]
